Scene Lab Carpenter

What I liked

The opportunity to contribute to my schools success, to be part of a team, and opportunities both to learn and to be an educator.

What I wish was different

Too early in the experience to determine.

Advice

Arrive confident in one's self and congenially accept others aptitudes and shortfalls.

Marketing Intern

September 2019 • Potsdam, NY

What I liked

Everyone in the office is really sweet and helpful. Whenever you have a question they do not mind helping you out.

What I wish was different

I wish that the office had the Adobe applications so I can use my skills in Photoshop, Illustrator and etc and better them.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help! There is a lot that goes into Marketing that people do not know. If you really don't understand something, please ask for help!

Library Circulation Clerk

January 2022 • Potsdam, NY

What I liked

It is a calm environment. It was on campus so I did not have to walk very far for it. Learning about the ins and outs of the library made it easy to find what I was looking for or for research purposes.

What I wish was different

Advice

This is a hard job to land for the simple reason of funding and that this is one of the only places on campus that will hire people without work studies.

Research assistant

May 2019 • Potsdam, NY

What I liked

I was able to conduct research alongside my research advisor, Dr. Fadi Bou Abdallah on mutant L-chain ferritin and their role in neuroferritinopathy, a neurodegenerative disease from the accumulation of iron in the brain. Not only was it a great experience being in the lab everyday, learning new skills, and collaborating with other students on a very interesting topic, but I also coauthored a paper that was published in a prestigious scientific journal this fall.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to stay longer to conduct research rather than only a month.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to never back down from an opportunity presented to you! I was offered this opportunity to stay in Potsdam over the summer to conduct research, and my first thought was that I’d have less time over the summer to spend back home with friends and family, however I chose to partake and discovered that I love working in a lab on novel projects. This opportunity that was presented to me set me on the path to decide that I want to pursue a PhD, and paved the way for future research opportunities.

Editorial Intern

September 2017 - May 2018 • Potsdam, NY

What I liked

I loved how hands on the internship was. I enjoyed the fact that my advisor for the internship taught us how to use the adobe software and let us experience the on it as well. He was not a dictator about the project.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have worked on the project after hours. We would only work on the magazine during contact hours.

Advice

The internship will be what you make it. If you do not apply yourself, you won’t get nothing out of it. And also utilize the connections you make. You never know how easy networking can affect your future.

Invasive Plant Species Intern

June - July 2020 • Waddington, NY

What I liked

I loved that it was a local internship, so I could stay at home while I worked over the summer.

What I wish was different

I cannot complain, as the internship fit perfectly given the COVID-19 pandemic.

Advice

I would say that the earlier on you know the different invasive species and how to input data into the app, the easier and faster the workload will go.

Reseach Intern

July - August 2020 • Potsdam, NY

What I liked

I loved my ability to work outdoors in the field, this made the experience worth wild for me. I learn a lot about invasive plant species, and can still point out the variations along the roadside!

What I wish was different

I wish COVID-19 had not been an issue, as this caused major discomfort in the hot sun walking roadside. COVID-19 precautions also caused other hurdles such as carpool driving opportunities, sharing of tools between interns, etc.

Advice

I would advise future interns working in the field to keep a sharp mind! It is easy to drone on through the experience, but you need to find ways to keep your mind active and invested in the study that you are learning from.
