About Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL)

SOUL is a local nonprofit that is driving a more resilient and environmentally equitable New Orleans through replanting its urban forest. It is doing so be planting strategically, as a system, and at a meaningful scale in order to impact stormwater, subsidence, air, water, and soil pollution, rising air temperatures and community health.

The organization's programming includes Community Forestry, Education, Voluntourism, and Policy/Advocacy. It has planted over 800 large native trees since its June 2016 inception.

“I loved how I was able to engage with the founder of the organization on a daily basis (Susannah Burley) which is uncommon in most organizations. I also liked how, once trained, I was able to independently be assigned a task. Having my own assignment and responsibility was such a great experience.Lastly I loved being able to go outside for the majority of the day and not be stuck inside.”
