Physical Therapy Technician

May - August 2022 • West Bloomfield, MI

What I liked

I got along really well with all of my coworkers at this clinic, so much so that we felt like a family. I also learned a lot about physical therapy techniques and strategies from all of the therapists, and I feel prepared for PT school. Working here, I was also actively practicing the knowledge I had gained in my classes, and I really enjoyed getting to apply that knowledge like this. It was also a really valuable and helpful experience getting to work directly and closely with patients, which I had never done before.

What I wish was different

I wish the hourly rate was higher, but our clinic received monthly bonuses if we hit all of our targets, which was nice and helped make up for it a little.

Advice

Whether you're on the fence about pursuing physical therapy or you're certain it's for you, I would recommend pursuing a job like this for even just one summer. You may find that you love it, or maybe it's not for you and you never realized that. It's better to take one summer to figure it out rather than have regrets after spending so much time and money pursuing (or not pursuing) a DPT.

Physical Therapy Technician

October 2017 • Novi, MI

What I liked

I loved the entire experience, I was taught about recent and current rehabilitation exercises and evidence based treatments. I was given independence with helping therapists prescribe exercises and monitored them to make sure they were doing it correctly. I was put into a leadership role for new hires during my time there and helped to train them.

What I wish was different

The long hours were the only thing I would change, however, it wasn't very bad.

Advice

It is what we make it. The job can be very rewarding as far as clinical experience and with understanding the material of the job. If you work to make the job more than the description it can be very beneficial in applying for professional school, and extremely helpful in preparing you for the things you will learn. It can actually give you a head start if you get into a program.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be open minded about learning different avenues of therapy if you are interested in PT/OT/PTA/OTA. I am almost done with my OT program but I still learn so much from the PT that I work for.
