Research assistant

April 2018 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

I was ability to gain in experience in several important research areas and expand my resume. I also received valuable mentoring that has helped me in my job searching experience.

What I wish was different

I haven't enjoyed a few of my assignments, but they provided useful skills and experiences so I'm still happy to have done them.

Advice

Getting a research position can be really tricky without knowing someone. Keep in mind, that getting to know your professors isn't the only way to find a lab to work. I ended up working with my TA after sending all sorts of emails to professors and never hearing back.

iGEM Co-Captain

September 2020 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

In iGEM, the undergraduates on the team have (almost) complete control on their project direction, lab techniques, and outreach. I got to build a synthetic biology project from the ground up, being supported at every turn by our mentor and other faculty both at UCSC and external. It allowed me to discover parts of science I never knew existed, and put me in direct contact with the leading researchers in the field.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time. There is so much to get out of the iGEM program.

Advice

If something seems scary or daunting, it means you're going to learn a lot. Get used to the feeling, because it brings good change.

Research felllow

July 2020 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

I was able to get to know my faculty advisor and fellow researchers and learn about the research and publication process as an undergrad

What I wish was different

Since I haven't done this type of research before, it would have been nice to have more of an introduction to how the process works and what it should look like off the bat to avoid a lot of the small mistakes we made, but we did get to learn by doing.

Advice

Ask lots of questions if you don't understand something or want to learn more, since your advisor is there to help and guide you.

Alumni Engagement Intern

October 2018 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

I like the freedom of my job and schedule flexibility. Most of my projects are straight forward but also sometimes challenging, which can be nice.

What I wish was different

I wish office morale was different, it's VERY dull and anti-social, especially for interns. I wish my supervisors were more personable and treated me just a tad more equal and not just "the intern".

Advice

It is a great job but it is different from any job I have ever had or ever will have. Just get ready to not talk to anyone for hours at a time and just sit in your cube and put your head down and work. But also you have so much freedom and minimal supervision. It's important that you work hard even when the supervision is minimal to gain trust with your supervisors.

Academic Personnel/ Payroll Specialist

June 2019 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

It's a very stable environment overall, particularly working for the same university that you graduated from. If it's the route you'd like to take, I'd recommend starting in a position in your undergrad, and do good work in it. It allows you to build connections, practice managing time and responsibility, and gaining valuable experience you can learn from.

What I liked

Worked my own hours, and had a great support group of graduate students and professors.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten paid for my time.

Advice

Don’t be scared to ask professors for research and to put your foot down when it’s work you should be getting paid for. Don’t settle for something just because you feel like you need to.

Academic Intern

February 2018 - August 2019 • Soledad, CA

What I liked

My job took me back to my former middle school in Soledad. The Gear Up Program is designed to help lower income students find a pathway to college. Most of my, and my fellow interns, tasks revolved around tutoring and advising 7th and 8th grade students. My favorite part of the job was connecting students with available college and extracurricular resources and guiding them towards better grades in challenging classes.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to attract more students to take advantage of the programs benefits, such as after school tutoring and field trips.

Advice

Most young students from low income households know little about college and career pathways, but do have strong interests and passions surrounding both academics and leadership opportunities.
