Texas House of Representatives / Recruitment for House Support Offices

Congressional Intern

May - July 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I was able to enter into the world of our nation’s Capitol, in all of its business and organized chaos. Each day was new and brought me to engage with the needs of our country and my home district. Whether it was researched for policy work or educating myself on upcoming bills, I was always learning new things.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunity to sit in on lobbyist meetings. Though I got to overhear many meetings from my desk, there were very fascinating topics being discussed that I could have benefitted listening in on. There is only so much we can fit into one internship though!

Advice

Take initiative!! The best experiences I had in DC were from me asking my Chief of Staff for opportunities to learn or contribute. I got to meet amazing people and listen to fascinating briefings because I sought after them. Who wants to sit at their desk all day anyway?
