It depends on which internship the application is for. In general, a sincere commitment and potential personal connection to the item at hand can give a real boost. Otherwise, the classic motivation, attention to detail, and familiarity with the organization/issue are good to emphasize.
There is no particular mentor program, but there are a lot of presentations with upper management and outside speakers that offer more room for networking as well as chances to forge personal connections and learn a lot about their career paths and recommendations. It's incredibly fun and helpful.
