Director of Public Affairs, Apex Stake
May 2017 • Apex, NC
What I liked
I love being able to interact with the community leaders and volunteers and get to know others and the great work the do in my community.
What I wish was different
There were a lot of big events and I felt like an event planner much of the time, which was not what I most wanted to be doing. The events were wonderful and I was able to interact with, meet and interview some amazing people, but I would prefer that aspect were less of my time.
Advice
Public Affairs is a vast and wonderful experience that requires a great deal of flexibility and to do it effectively, it should be a full time position. I went into the assignment hoping to devote 10-20 hours per week on the position, but due to planning 3 large events in a 3 month span, my time commitment was typically 20-40 hours per week with a few weeks over 50 hours. That big time commitment made it difficult to keep up on my school assignments.

Traveling Missionary
May - October 2019 • Fort Collins, CO
What I liked
I love that it taught me how to love others and serve them without thought for gain. I learned the importance of discipline of hard work and developing strong habits that I've kept with me off the mission I'm forever grateful for. The experience truly strengthen my faith.
What I wish was different
There's nothing I would change about my actual experience and would do it again! My only regret is that I encountered a few health complications while on the job that I wish I hadn't had so as to finish my full 18 months.
Advice
One big piece of advice I have would be to learn and have a testimony of the manual, Preach My Gospel, and The Book of Mormon. The more you know them, the more you'll be able to teach with ease. My other would be to make sure you're physically ready for it and trust in God in everything you do, even in the little things. If you have to two main things, you'll be ten times more prepared.

Missionary
February 2018 - August 2019 • Fort Worth, TX
What I liked
It was good to experience the culture of the South and meet the hospitable people of Texas. I also was able to develop better skills in working with others and talking with everyone about Christ.
What I wish was different
I have no answer to this question. I liked my experience as I was.
Advice
Advice I would be is to do everything whole-heartedly. You'll be able to try new things and develop new skills if you are dilligent with your work.
It's easy to feel under-prepared/not-qualified, the only thing that matters is your willingness to learn and a good work-ethic.

Project Management Intern
April - September 2019 • Riverton, UT
What I liked
I loved the spiritual environment and my coworkers. I was one of only two interns, the rest of my coworkers were full-time employees. Because of this, I felt more like an employee rather than an intern. I was also given many experiences to grow my education and lead others. I have come out of this experience a better manager than I was before, as well as a better team member.
What I wish was different
Halfway through my internship my manager changed. It was a disorienting experience both for him and for me, and it was hard to deal with the change of management structure. Overall, it was a good experience to gain from, but it was hard at the time.
Advice
Don't be afraid to propose change. Sometimes since everyone is used to the way that things are working, change won't be easy, but the benefit of change is often a good thing.

What I liked
I had an incredible experience as I was able to see people feel the goodness that exists in God. There is a power found within the Gospel as found within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I loved the chance I had to work as a volunteer and come closer to my Savior through helping others do the same. I loved seeing drug or alcohol addicts begin to see the light as they learned about their Savior. I loved the chance to teach and to expand my teaching abilities.
