The College of Wooster

Applied Methods and Research Experience (AMRE) Consultant

May - July 2023 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

I liked that I got the opportunity to work with a professor, peers in my college and across the globe, and I was able to work with a client and propose novel business ideas to grow their organization.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice that I have about this experience is to have a growth mindset and be ready to pick up new skills.

What I liked

I loved being able to welcome the class of 2024 to the College, and talk about how my experiences have shaped who I am as a person.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have had a more traditional year (ie, being able to meet students in person instead of over Zoom) so that I could have connected with them better.

Advice

I think that by being open to new ways of doing things, even if the "old way" was preferably, allows you the opportunity to grow. If I could go back to the start of the summer, I would tell myself to accept that things won't be done the way they had in the past, and that it will work out no matter what... because it did!

Student Researcher

May - July 2020 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

The independence

What I wish was different

I wish there weren't as many presentations and trainings, which I thought didn't really contribute much to anything.

Advice

Don't be afraid to seek help from your advisors.

Student Research Assistant

May - July 2019 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

Great research experience to get acquainted with the research process, and a fantastic opportunity to work with a professor independently and really start to think and develop ideas on your own.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been with a group of other students as well, rather than working primarily independently towards the end of my experience.

Advice

When taking part in this experience, completely immerse yourself and give it your all. There are a lot of times when you can do the bare minimum to get things done, but what you put in is what you will get out.

Summer Research Assistant

May - June 2019 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

There are multiple ways to create machine learning, and it was very interesting to learn about how something that we think is simple is very complicated for computers to learn. Some things vary enough that it will take computers a long time to learn.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

It was interesting. Having a strong background in music is good, and the knowledge of at least one language would be helpful.

Stockroom Assistant

May - August 2019 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

It was a familiar job (I work in the stockroom during the school year too). My boss was very nice.

What I wish was different

It can be lonely being the only student working 8 hrs every day.

Advice

Always find tasks to do because it makes the job more fun when you are busy

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2019 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to learn more about being in a Biochemistry Research Lab. I was able to learn new techniques such as protein purification, and I was challenged daily for deeper understanding of the research project. I was also able to assist in experiments.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to do more experiments, but due to the failure of protein purification due to unknown circumstances, the group was unable to do more experiments.

Advice

If you put full effort into research work every day, new opportunities continue to arise and you will gain a deeper understanding within your subject of study.

Summer lab assistant and summer-camp intern

May - July 2019 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

Working at a wide variety of tasks, being able to have a lot of interpersonal control over what I did in the day, being trusted to work independently in a results-based job

What I wish was different

More interactions with other people

Advice

Don't get frustrated with feeling like you have to complete a thesis-amount of lab work over 7 weeks of summer research

Political Science Research assistant

May - July 2019 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

I liked that I was able to take some of the research in the direction that I envisioned and was given enough leeway to seek out resources that extended beyond the help of my immediate supervisors.

What I wish was different

A more stimulating work environment would have been ideal. I also wish my days were not as repetitive as they were, which was not that surprising given the lack of social interaction in the workplace.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to inquire about the research projects that you will be working on as it can be quite frustrating to work on something you’re not really interested in.

Physics REU Summer Research Student

June - August 2017 • Wooster, OH

What I liked

Wooster was a very welcoming and fun environment. My research adviser was incredibly experienced and helpful; he went far beyond what was required of him to help students with their projects. I enjoyed my summer project and support from my adviser has allowed me to continue working on it during the academic year.

What I wish was different

The housing situation wasn't great but could certainly have been worse. Room and board were reasonably priced. There isn't a lot to do in the town, but that means research students can spend a lot of time together.

Advice

Don't buy the summer meal plan; just go to Walmart for groceries.
