What I liked

I loved the full experience of teaching, designing lesson plans, and grading assessments. I also enjoyed how we got to design an elective class of our own (I co-taught a World Cultures elective, along with Humanities). Although we were given a lot of independence with our lesson plans, we also received helpful guidance and feedback during orientation and the rest of the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have received at least a small stipend, but the experience was definitely still worth it.

Advice

Try to plan/organize your lesson plans ahead of time and think of extra activities to have on-hand in case you finish your lessons too quickly.

What I liked

I loved the experience of teaching! I was teaching math and an elective of my choice. I chose to teach New York City history and had the freedom to design and teach the curriculum in whatever way I liked. It was great to see what kind of work went into teaching (I will be teaching after college) and get to lesson plan and lead a classroom on my own.

What I wish was different

I wish the school had been a bit more communicative. I accepted the job offer in early March, and did not hear any confirmation or details (after reaching out multiple times) until early June.

Advice

Expect it to be a lot of work. Teaching is very difficult, but it's incredibly rewarding to make connections with students and watch them grow. It was nice that the internship was only five weeks, because it was an exhausting five weeks!

7th Grade Math Teacher

What I liked

I loved the amount of responsibility the staff at EHS gave the interns, and how they trusted us with the students. I also loved being able to run sports with the students as a way to connect outside of the classroom.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship were paid, however it makes complete sense that it is not. The school is privately funded and free for students, and their funds are better used elsewhere. The experience is worth being unpaid.

Advice

Get organized early. It is best to be overly prepared for your students than underprepared. And try to make classes as engaging as possible--it is their summer!
