The GIANT Company

Retail Operations Intern

June - August 2023 • Wynnewood, PA

What I liked

I liked how the experience was completely hands-on, and on site. Everyday was in person, and I got full on the job experience of how Giant runs on a day to day. There were intern days at the corporate office in Carlisle, and we had many developmental opportunities and fun activities during these days. Day to day activities included shadowing managers, working in departments, and getting a basic scope of the operations of Giant.

What I wish was different

While the internship program was structured, I had wished there were more day to day outlined responsibilities. The internship is great for self starters who know their interests and what they want to learn. Many times it was on me to determine what I wanted to do for the day, or what I wanted to learn.

Advice

I would advice others to know that this internship is more of a management trainee program, and learning what Giant managers do. I would connect and network with others as much as possible, and take advantage of the opportunities provided. It is very easy to connect with those higher up within the company, and the internship is what you make of it!

Starbucks Barista

June - August 2019 • Chalfont, PA

What I liked

I have had this position since 2016, so I liked the familiarity of going back to the same place of work. I liked working as a Starbucks Barista because I was able to create meaningful relationships with my customers and my coworkers, and it was a fun work environment.

What I wish was different

I do not like many of the policies and work conditions at Giant, therefore I will not be going back over break or during the summer. I have moved to a corporate location of Starbucks due to higher pay (in New York) and better working conditions.

Cashier

April 2018 - September 2019 • Centerville, PA

What I liked

The supervisors and managers were generally very nice and understanding. No one expected me to do anything I wasn't comfortable with, and I felt like I could ask for help whenever I needed it.

What I wish was different

I wish the other employees had been as dedicated as I was, but I suppose that is to be expected in an entry job like that.

Advice

Start memorizing the PLU numbers for produce the day you get there! It makes everything move so much faster.

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexible schedule and my friendly co-workers. I also really enjoyed how large the team was, because it meant that when I requested off within a decent amount of time, I was able to get off.

What I wish was different

The job required that I was on my feet for hours at a time, which was difficult on my feet and back, but still manageable.

Advice

You get out of it what you put in. I intentionally made friends with people so that if I ever need a shift covered, I had people I could ask. I returned the favor as well. Additionally, smiling at grumpy customers can go a long way. Especially if you want them to fill out the survey at the bottom of the receipt. By being nice, I was able to convince people to mention me positively in the survey, and I was rewarded with coupons for money off my purchase!
