The Goddard School

Early Childhood Teacher

April 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with the early childhood age group. The children ranged from ages 8 months to 5 years old. I typically worked with the 1-2 year old age group, so we went over colors, shapes, how to use our words, sharing, fine motor skills, and many more things. I am currently studying elementary education at Towson University, so it was intriguing to learn where some of my students may come from before entering my classroom.

What I wish was different

When I worked there over the summer, the children are not learning content as heavily as they did during the school year. So, working at the Goddard School over the summer felt more like watching children at a day care. I wished that there were more engaging and worthwhile lessons for the children during the summer.

Advice

Remember that you are preparing these children for the world and that some of the things you say or do will be ingrained into them. You have to be mindful of the right times to provide assistance (ex: help them with putting away a big bed or potty training) versus the right times to allow for independence (ex: letting them open the marker or cleaning up after themselves). It is easy to do everything for the children (ex: opening the marker lid or picking up all the toys), but they are very smart and learn quickly what can be done for them.
