The Salvation Army

School Social Worker

October 2022 • Manchester, NH

What I liked

I have really liked all aspects to this program since I began volunteering. The interactions with the children make me feel like I am doing something bigger than myself. I enjoy helping them with school work, playing games, and eating dinner with the kids.

What I wish was different

I truly like the entire outline of the program, nothing needs to be different.

Advice

Advice I would share about this experience would be that when working with children who need the attention in after school activities, be mindful of their family situations. A lot of the kids do not exactly love being there, therefore I try my best to counter their feelings and make positive conversations.

Volunteer Coordinator

October - December 2019 • Frankfort, KY

What I liked

Collaborating with school clubs and private organizations to establish a block of time for their organization to be bell ringers for the Red Kettle Season.

What I wish was different

I wish I coudl have had outreach materials to include in community events, and that I would have incorporated a competitive approach with a bragging rights incentive.

Advice

In a season of giving contacti clubs and organizations early before they commit their time and volunteer efforts elsewhere.

Operations Coordinator

July 2020 - August 2021 • Denver, CO

What I liked

Very engaging job, but can be challenging at times. Very fulfilling to help people.

What I wish was different

A more efficient handling of the bureaucracy working with other organizations, giving more power to lower level employees rather than waiting on decisions from higher ups.

Advice

Be well trained in emergency management and the principles of verbal judo.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2021 • Arlington, TX

What I liked

For future educators, it’s great way to get the hands in experience of working with kids. It’s structured in a way that is very similar to school classes. They offer tons of over time and other opportunities to earn extra cash. The camp is music and arts based too so for music majors like myself it’s a rewarding experience. Also, Salvation Army jobs always give Bonuses on top of your pay even if it’s just a summer job. They’re really accommodating for off time if you need it or something comes up. Generally you only work 8 hours a day but on occasion you may work up to 12, if there’s a long field trip day, but it reflects well in the pay.

What I wish was different

The main thing would be the organization of field trips could be altered. They were not always the most organized of the when and who will be going since not all counselors go. We were short staffed dime days due to lack of staff being there, which is taxing but not too bad in the long haul.

Advice

Be prepared to work with kids that could be range from grumpy to enthused and excited. Every helps track all classes from gym to STEM, and Art, and music, though we all have out speciality classes that we teach. The work load is evenly divided.
