There is a relatively steep learning curve for this position if you do not have prior experience with machine learning algorithms or MATLAB. Research Assistant

October 2016 • Tyler, TX

What I liked

I've been working with this professor for about three years. I'm glad I used my free time this summer to advance my progress on this project. We are writing our manuscript and are hoping to get published within the next year.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done more during the week. I and my professor had other things we had to do in addition to our chemistry research.

Advice

Get involved in research as early as you can. I started doing research my first semester of college, and it was one of the most helpful contributors to advancing my academic thought process.

Undergraduate Administrative Assistantt

December 2018 - July 2019 • Tyler, TX

What I liked

I loved working in the music department. As a music student it was really great to be a small part in the great clockwork of the music departments daily operations.

What I wish was different

Sometimes I wish the workload would have been more evenly spread throughout the student workers. More often than not I was handed the bulk of the workload for the student teachers. I'm not complaining, because I managed my time and did everything to the best of my ability, however, I just wish there was a better representation of equal workload.

Advice

Be on top of every task. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Make a checklist of everything. Have templates for all of the program formats. Don't be late, show up before the other faculty, work hard and be humble.

Administrative Assistant

April 2018 • Tyler, TX

What I liked

I liked how easy using handshake was compared to the old system. Once I started I really enjoyed being the friendly face that student see when they come into the office. I love being someone they can trust to answer their questions.

What I wish was different

I honestly wish this could turn into a full time position. I feel like it could be, and it would lighten the advisors work load to allow them to have the time and energy for what all the students need. Also, many of the older students see me as a younger student and tend to walk all over me if they feel like I stand in their way.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to talk to the advisors if you have a problem. Very often they can sympathize and assist you with the situation.
