THOR Wealth Management, Inc.

Financial Planning Intern

January 2019 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

It is a small company so this role involved wearing many hats. I learned so much about so many different topics including social security optimization, investment management, tax planning, and financial planning. The work I did was equivalent to that of a full-time employee (i.e., attending client meetings, contacting clients directly for questions, scheduling meetings, and creating financial plans and recommendations for clients).

What I wish was different

If anything, I wish I would have gotten paid a little bit more. I love everything this role had to offer. I love the people, the environment, and the work. At times, it was also a little stressful but that was only because I was doing very important and meaningful work. My supervisor relied on me a ton - which is good. But with that, the fear of making a mistake weighing over me was sometimes stressful.

Advice

I would advise (and this goes for any role) to just be curious and ambitious. If you are bored or lacking work, ask for more. I knew everyone else had a ton on their plate and they want to hand some of the stuff they aren't energized to do to me. They hired another intern there after I had been there for 4 months and he was not asked back because he did the bare minimum and because he didn't ask questions. This sounds harsh but they know nobody could fully understand the ins and outs of investment management as a 20 year old. Therefore, they knew he had questions in his head that he wasn't asking. Furthermore, they could tell because he didn't ask these questions, he wasn't necessarily passionate about the role and they didn't want to give him more work.
