Publicity and Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I loved being so close to the production process of award-winning books, being able to talk to the art department, editing, distribution, copyediting, etc. with such ease., and generally being in an environment for the first time where people understand literature the way I do. We could all effectively communicate and joke I hadn't seen before.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've worked with my fellow interns for longer. I came in a lull between hiring periods and was therefore alone for great lengths of the day, which at times felt isolating. During the last month some really lovely interns came in and I quickly befriended them.

Advice

Be sure to be well-read, because everyone at work will be, but trust that it's to everyone's advantage if you read outside the literary bestseller list: there were many times I could relate to a project or suggest a new direction only because of the obscure subgenres I read back in high school. Also, many people don't want to read outside of work because of how book-focused their work IS, so keep in mind you might fall into that trap.
