What I liked

Margo is incredibly kind and helpful. She really cares about you and tries to make you a better business person. Hours are flexible and you get a lot of hands on experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of a set schedule, just because I had a part time job as well so it made it difficult to schedule.

Public Relations Intern

May 2018 • Uniondale, NY

What I liked

I liked that I got to work closely with the CEO of the firm, Margo Cargill, during the internship. She was very impressed with my professionalism and invited me to continue working for her during the fall. Margo and I got the opportunity to get very close and I have learned so much about work environments, communication skills, marketing, government relations and even personal empowerment from her. She has been a very important mentor in my life and I am so grateful to have represented the firm she started.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would've had the opportunity to take on more clients that the firm represented during the summer. We got to work on community relations for the LIRR's major Third Track Expansion Project which required a lot of responsibilities. If I got to represent even more clients from different industries, I feel as though that would have expanded my knowledge even further. Luckily, I am currently working on three projects with my boss this fall.

Advice

My advice for students who are currently looking for internship opportunities, is to reach out to the connections that they currently have. I got notified about this internship by one of the graduate assistants for my fellowship with the Center for Civic Engagement. She had interned with my boss previously. I contacted her expressing interest in the position and she introduced me to Margo immediately. I got a phone interview the next day and was hired right after. I am very fortunate to have met so many great people at Hofstra who are willing to help students pursue their careers.
