Blackboard Customer Support

January 2022 - March 2024 • Towson, MD

What I liked

Absolutely loved the opportunity to learn more about Blackboard's system and talking to clients. If you have a customer service background this is great for you! When I first began, we were trained, welcomed, encouraged, and fully supported. We used to have a Manager that graduated from Towson and aided in our day to day questions and was well informed about the Blackboard system. He also set up group training sessions. I like how they allowed the modules to be self paced when learning the ins and outs of blackboard. I also appreciated the support chat with upper admin answering questions. Kelly Cook truly cared about her student staff and we in turn did our best to upkeep the demands of the job. Ms. Cook allowed us to complete homework, get a bite to eat, talk amongst ourselves, and developed relations with all of us. Ms. Cook was fair with scheduling and created a positive work environment.

What I wish was different

As this is a work study job, I believe it should encompass financial need when assigning shifts to people but they do not care about student financial concerns. SADLY, student staff were solely looked at as numbers especially when funding was cut. There was a way for student managers to see how many tickets you completed. ALLEGEDLY< The supervisors would only assign shifts to the people with the most tickets not allowing others to catch up. In addition, they DONT train you anymore. You will have to watch the modules and just wing it and a student manager might answer questions. ALWAYS put everything in writing, communication is slightly off. The supervisors communication in Fall 2022 & spring 2023 was scattered, and often it fell on student staff to relay information or they'd get frustrated with us. We do realize student staff's role is to help delegate the faculties job duties, however whenever we would ask in the support chat, we were met with the attitude "you should know this already" and the student managers also give that attitude except the 2 young women! Very passive remarks, wish there was more positivity in the last year. A common theme was things are okay when others may do it, but you'd be called out if you attempt something similar.

Advice

Perhaps eliminate student managers and the person overseeing us. Bring a former blackboard employee that knows the BB content and how to train student employees. You may think the student employee's are there to do the grunt work but we really do benefit from the opportunity to learn an operating system like Blackboards.

Orientation Leader

March - August 2020 • Towson, MD

What I liked

The determination of the staff to ensure everyone who was hired still had a job this summer. I also liked how over the course of a few months, it began to feel like a family rather than people I work with.

What I wish was different

I wish it would’ve been in person. However, COVID-19 wasn’t something any of us wished for. We acknowledged our circumstances and made it work with what we had.

Advice

Never be afraid to step out your comfort zone. I’m naturally introverted so becoming an orientation leader challenged me to speak to others.

Social Media Assistant

February 2021 • Towson, MD

What I liked

I really liked the creative freedom that came with the job. I was not restricted with how I wanted to pursue my digital art designs and I was often encouraged to think outside the box. Also, the work environment and co-worker relationships were such a great experience because everyone was very positive and supportive of each other!

What I wish was different

Considering the fact that I was performing my summer job virtually, I wish that I was able to execute this job in person. I believe it would have helped us with brainstorming ideas and being more efficient with our work.

Advice

My one piece of advice would be to build positive relationships with the people you work with. The work environment you reside in can genuinely affect how well you enjoy your job. It's always great to be in a supportive workspace.
