Software Engineering and UI/UX intern

March - September 2022 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

The best part about this internship is the team! Everyone here wants to see you have fun, succeed, and be proud of your work; and you can tell! Ally, Jonny, and Killian are great at making sure you are getting the most out of your time here and supporting in any way possible. Also, I had the freedom to choose to work on projects that furthered my academic and career goals as a Trees intern. I got to have complete ownership over a project and the Trees team was there to help me achieve my goals.

What I wish was different

Nothing, really. I got to go in to office a bit which I loved, I only wish more of the interns did as well to form that intern team community.

Advice

As an intern at a startup, there are endless areas that you can be helpful in, so it is up to you to choose projects that challenge you, interest you, and further your goals as a student and professional. If you want to switch up what you are doing, tell someone! They will be more than happy to help you find something that you feel is a good fit for you. Also, get to know everyone. The Trees team is super friendly and you have the opportunity to form valuable connections and mentors.

UI/UX Design Intern

June - August 2022 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I loved the variety of work I was offered and the ability to choose between a few projects among a big list. It really allowed me to do things I was interested in. Everyone I met at Trees was great to work with and extremely helpful, especially at the beginning of the internship as I began to get into the groove of things. I learned how to use some new software and received feedback that allowed me to improve my wireframing skills. This internship was a fun way to get some real-world experience that I would definitely recommend.

What I wish was different

Advice

As a UX Design intern, I would recommend attempting to familiarize yourself with Sketch before the start of the internship so you can jump right into things and get the most out of the internship. It's awesome to be able to use your time efficiently and produce work that can hopefully be implemented throughout the app!

Software Engineering Intern

March - June 2022 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

The Trees team is an extremely welcoming and tight-knit environment. Jonny, Ally, and Killian did a great job of running the interns through Agile development sprints. The team was always flexible and they worked hard to make a collaborative and enjoyable work culture.

What I wish was different

I wish there was technical mentorship available. Also that the interns could have had more interaction, but given the circumstances with COVID, there wasn't much that the Trees team could have done to fix this.

Advice

I would say Trees is a great place to get used to working on larger code bases and commercially used tech stacks. My advice to new interns: be prepared to explore the tech stack on your own and put in the hours necessary to get comfortable with any unfamiliar programming frameworks.

Grant Writing Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed how many opportunities there were to improve my writing and research skills. I was able to learn in a plethora of fields which will help me with any career choice I choose. The managers and other interns are accommodating and easy to work with. This has been one of the best internships I had and I appreciate everything I was able to take from there.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything was different!

Advice

Communicate effectively with your manager and other interns so everyone is on the same page. Also, try to get your tasks done in a timely manner so you have more opportunities for new tasks that will broaden your knowledge.

Content Intern

January - May 2022 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I liked the different kinds of work available to me. Not only could I stick with developing content, but I was given multiple opportunities to tackle project management, client or stakeholder relationships, and other assignments that expanded my skills and allowed me to provide different contributions to the team. I also liked and appreciated the communication with my team and supervisor; it was a big relief and help to know I could easily talk to my supervisor about anything and get constructive feedback to overcome a project hurdle or be inspired for a piece of content.

What I wish was different

I can't think of much I would say I wish had been different.

Advice

Be open to different tasks and projects and make it clear what you're interested in doing (or not doing). You'll get so much more out of this internship with that mindset!

Content Writer

January - May 2022 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I loved how many opportunities there were to truly work towards your professional goals. The staff looks out for you, offers useful advice, presents opportunities for projects, and you receive very helpful feedback. You complete work you actually look forward to doing, and if you're interested in another type of work, just say the word and you'll be instantly hooked up. I also loved how accommodating everyone was, especially because I'm from Las Vegas, so I completed my internship remotely. If you're taking on too much, just let your team know and they'll be very flexible. Lastly, this is a fun environment. Everyone is laid back, but motivated, which was inspiring to me. You also get to do fun socials every now and then! We played Mario Kart (mobile) and that was really nice to break up the work and get to know everyone.

What I wish was different

I'm not sure if I wish anything had been different because I loved my experience here so much. As a remote worker, it would have been cool to stop by the actual office, but that has nothing to do with the internship itself.

Advice

Definitely take advantage of all the opportunities available to you. There is something for everyone, and if you're interested in something else, they'll find something! If you have an idea, tell them, work on it, and they will support you all the way through so it can become a realized accomplishment. This is such a supportive team and the app/company stands for something great. I fully recommend this internship.

What I liked

I really liked how supportive and flexible the enviorment at Trees was. Ally was my manager and she was supporitve and transparent. It was easy to communicate with her about any updates or ask any questions without feeling fear. At Trees, I was also able to work on projecst that matched my skillsets and participate in projects that I may not have done before. You are able to have a say on what it is you want to work on and they are flexible with it. Furthermore, the team at Trees is very understanding and supportive.

Software Developer Intern

January - March 2022 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

Everyone on the Trees team is amazing. From the very first day I felt welcomed and excited to work with such awesome people. Being on the dev team during Winter Quarter 2022 we focused heavily on programming in Flutter/Dart. Killian, our dev lead, guided us through updating V1 of the software into V2. As interns we were encouraged to own the project and given creative control. It felt really good to know the work that I did would make it into the final release of V2.

What I wish was different

I wish we had a longer internship to really get into the groove of things. Since none of us knew much about Flutter coming into the internship, it took a few weeks to really get moving. I feel that if we had a few more months to work we could have made some really solid progress.

Advice

If you're coming in as a Software Developer, learn a bit about Flutter and Dart before you start. That way you can hit the ground running and see results a lot quicker.

UI Designer Intern

August - December 2021 • Tasmania

What I liked

I liked how inclusive the people in charge were and how open they were about the whole process--from the coding, the design, the framework, Ally and Jonny are straightforward. This, in turn, inspired me to be more explorative with my own designs--I had the confidence that they would tell me what to fix in a way that wasn't demeaning or rude. At the end of the day, the company wants to build a better app and I want to become a better designer, and working with them in an environment that comfortably allowed me to do so.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be confident and take chances! Have a good attitude about the whole internship!

UI/UX Designer Intern

September - December 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

This internship was very helpful to me. I learned how to use Lunacy/Sketch and did research. It was also very cool to be working closely with the Trees founder. My opinion was heard and respected and I was able to make a difference.

What I wish was different

My experience here exceeded my expectations. Everything went very smoothly and it was overall a great experience for me. The only problem for me was that I had problems using their toolkit because I had a PC instead of a Mac. But other than that, it was amazing!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The people at Trees are super nice and friendly and are happy to help you!

UX/UI Intern

June - December 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

You get to pick your own projects and what you work on. I liked the access to all the resources (downtown office, working professionals) they offered. As a designer, I got direct feedback for my designs and learned a lot. The team was easy to work with and communicated well, I really enjoyed working with everyone.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to take on new projects/tasks even if you have little to no experience on how to do it. Challenge yourself and put in as much effort as you can because you get out what you put in. Lastly, make sure your voice is heard, don't be afraid to ask questions, your opinion matters.

UI/UX Designer Intern

September - December 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

Trees is a very close-knit company. It was amazing to work alongside people who consistently advise you and provide appropriate feedback. I learned a lot and was able to gain hands-on experience.

What I wish was different

This internship was a lot easier for those of us who had Mac laptops due to the software used. A switch of software to include both PC and Mac users would help.

Advice

I would advise starting work on their assignment for the week as soon as possible so that they can ask for help and answers to their questions before the next meeting.

What I liked

I liked how much creative input I had on the projects I was working on. My supervisors and the people I worked with were also really easy to get along with and friendly. I learned a lot about the design process and methodology.

What I wish was different

Some aspects of the internship could have been more organized and I wish I got more feedback on my designs.

Advice

Make sure you keep a constant line of communication with your supervisors and co-interns! Don't be afraid to reach out for help if you get stuck.

What I liked

I loved how welcoming and accommodating everyone is, they will adjust your workload if you felt like you were overwhelmed (which I never felt!). The work was also very rewarding due to the fact that you got to interact with so many different people and learn more about the job at hand .The people that I personally worked with are one of the most pleasant to work with and will always remember them.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work together with them but with covid and where I was living at the time made it simply impossible to commute or work together physically.

Advice

Always be open to ask any questions to them, they are very open to lend you a hand.

UX/UI Design Intern

May - August 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I found the work environment and company attitude at Trees to be the best aspect of the company. Each employee is dedicated to their job, and works hard to create a strong product. Yet, the work environment is not stressful. I immediately felt welcomed from the first day I started work at Trees. A positive work atmosphere and an optimistic company attitude creates an awesome experience for all employees.

What I wish was different

I honestly cannot think of anything I would change. 10/10 internship!

Advice

My one piece of advice is to try and meet with your team in person as much as possible. The pandemic has made this challenging, but working in person always yields the best results.
