Project Engineering Co-op

January - August 2023 • Fairfield, OH

What I liked

I have been a part of many different projects for different companies, which include McKesson, Berkshire Grey, Borderless, Dickies, and Amazon, as well as internal projects. I have created permit, approval, detail, and installation drawings for these projects, as well as traveled to a few sites for commissioning trips. The biggest of these trips was to CHO1, and Amazon facility in Virginia, where for a week we went and inspected the installed conveyor and worked through issues found. Overall, I have had a very informative and impactful experience. For my second co-op term, I worked alongside two new co-ops. I had the opportunity to take them under my wing and teach them how to accomplish their tasks using all the skills I've acquired. I was also given more responsibility in my tasks and expectations. I was called upon when quality control was needed in drawing clarity, model preciseness, and ordering accuracy. I did not get to go on any other site visits, but I had many excellent experiences in the material handling field.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was different about my experience would be a bit more variation in my roles. I have been a part of many different projects with many different things to do, but most of my work has been done in AutoCAD. I have not been out working on the physical conveyor belts as much as I would have hoped. A bit more of this type of work and I would have been completely content. For my second term there was plenty of active projects that were nearing completion. However, there was not as much work available to do as the first for the co-op role. Because of that, the projects I worked on were not typically as varied. I still had plenty of different experiences, but more active projects would have been welcome.

Advice

If I had to give one piece of advice for future potential hires of TREW, it would be to ask as many questions as possible and seek more experiences. My coworkers are always open to explaining things to me and giving me new tasks to complete. The more interest you show in what you are doing, the more responsibility they will give you. And finally, I highly recommend attending the teambuilding activities, since they are a great way to relax from work and build better relationships with those around you.
