Commercial Fishing Deckhand

What I liked

I enjoyed the physical work and mental challenge. I was able to see beautiful country and experience life on the sea.

What I wish was different

I wish we spent more time on land. It was difficult to be stuck on a boat for an extended period of time.

Advice

One piece of advice is to meet your crew and captain before accepting the job. The attitude and personality of the crew makes or breaks your experience.

factory laborer

What I liked

it's hard work, but the pay is great. immediate supervisors are pretty easy going too, if your on night shift.

What I wish was different

the higher-ups don't seem to have a lot of respect for workers, especially workers on second or third shift.

Advice

it's a good summer job, but don't take it too seriously and don't make it a permanent thing.

Commercial Vessel Co-Captain/Deckhand

What I liked

It provided a serious lesson in the value of hard work and being able to problem solve on the fly. Most days were 16+ hours and there were always situations that needed to be solved.

What I wish was different

This job is entirely dependent on the fish showing up, so when external factors such as climate change and tariffs cut into that, you also end up making less money that season.

Advice

Be prepared to work very hard and be very tired, but if you are one of the few that can grind it out there is good money to be made.

What I liked

Loved the scenery and all of the cool and interesting things you see and learn about. Really it was was amazing to escape to a place where there is just about nothing, in terms of civilization, around you.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing. I understand that this job requires dedication and a lot of hard work. Sometimes that means lack of sleep or hygiene but as long as you do your job, every day you’ll closer to earning your pay check.

Advice

You’re on a boat for 3 months (I only touched land once for 15 minutes) and you really have to go with the flow. That means with the flow of the water and also to just accept things that are far beyond your control.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

The people there were very nice and willing to teach me new skills. The Chief engineer was very knowledgeable and was so willing to teach me and would push me to ask questions I did not know.

What I wish was different

The living was difficult because I was living with people who had been hired for the production line for the season and they were not the most nice or mentally stable people. I wish they had their own housing for interns only.

Advice

The hours are tough as well as the walking and standing. But if you keep a positive learning attitude you will find time goes by very fast and you are also getting paid to learn, which is amazing.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

Since I was on the Engineering team, I was able to work in any department under Engineering. This allowed me to get a lot of hands-on experience as well as discover what interested me. I was able to work with refrigeration systems, hydraulic systems, electrical work, and even PLC (programmable logic controller) programming.

What I wish was different

The location of the plant that I was working at was very remote and therefore internet connection and cell service was limited unless you payed for it.

Advice

If you are not afraid to get your hands dirty and are willing to work long, extended shifts, then this is a great opportunity. Though it was only a summer internship, the long shifts allow for more time to gain more experience.

Human Resources Intern

What I wish was different

Basic job function was a little bland, learned that I do not want to work in HR in the future.

Advice

Enjoyment is way more important than pay. I was on a bus for 4 hours a day and by the end of the summer, I was absolutely exhausted. Great work experience, but I about wore myself out.
