Astronomy Research Intern

May - July 2019 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I loved the pace and the collaboration. We took a trip to the McDonald Observatory with some students doing research in the classical studies department and I loved getting to have the interdisciplinary experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little bit more previous experience going into it, mostly in terms of the science behind the phenomena we were studying. It was nice to be a freshman and have this opportunity though, just without having experience with scientific readings it was sometimes difficult to keep up.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for help. either from your supervisor or your peers. You'd be surprised what people do and don't know and it allows you to build connections.

Mellon Summer Research Fellow

May - July 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Make a point of getting to know your professors! I felt comfortable asking my research mentor if I could work with her this summer because I had gone to her office hours consistently when I was in classes with her, and I was an active participant in class discussion. Our previous class experience together helped me understand her communication style and academic standards before summer research started.
