Biological Technician

June - August 2020 • Bozeman, MT

What I liked

This position gave me training on a variety of research techniques and equipment related to streams and fishery research. I was expected to work independently and as a part of a team. I felt like an employee rather than a student intern which helps prepare me to enter the workforce after graduation, and my coworkers were amazing.

What I wish was different

I've usually worked and lived in relatively urban areas and therefore use more alternative transportation like bikes and city buses. For a position in a remote area, I should have brought a car!

Advice

My employers valued initiative, interest, work ethic, and integrity above else. Never try to cover up a mistake, always be up front if you think it could cause any issues because the science is more important than your pride! For environmental jobs, be prepared to hike and carry equipment. You'll get in great shape!

Biological Technician

June 2018 • Boise, ID

What I liked

As a biological technician, I expanded my knowledge of ecological data retrieval while working outdoors in the Owyhee mountain range. This seasonal position offered me opportunities to expand my knowledge of post-fire rehabilitation of landscapes, as well as develop practical knowledge in the laboratory. Additionally, I was provided the opportunity to conduct my own research if desired.

What I wish was different

No set expectations in term of the necessary steps taken for career advancement. Advocating for yourself in terms of negotiating salary and sick leave is crucial to a good experience.

Advice

Be confident in your ability to work outdoors in all types of weather, and be able to solve problems in the field as they arise. Technical issues happen frequently and an independent goal oriented mindset is essential to success.
