Student Business Honors Intern

May - August 2021 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I learned a ton and was exposed to many different topics that examiners take part in when working with a company. It was super neat to view the other side of finance, instead of just working for a financial institution or investment advisor.

What I wish was different

I think I would've gotten the full experience if it was in person, so the experience was definitely hindered by the fact that it was virtual.

Advice

Come in wanting to learn and to work, because you can make this position your own and how much you put into it is how much you'll get out of it.

Student Honors Business Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The opportunity to come in an work under the mission of protecting investors was amazing. I felt like I learned so much about the SEC and also about working in the federal government. I got to interact with real, relevant, and important work everyday and I always felt proud of the work that I was doing. I also got to sit in on important meetings with high level executives which I really appreciated.

What I wish was different

The internship was unpaid and they are not an entry level organization so they could not offer a job after the internship.

Advice

I would recommend that anyone who is interest in the federal government, or financial regulation, try to get an internship at the SEC! They are a hardworking organization that has a lot of responsibility and you will learn so much through your time there. Definitely recommend to anyone interested in working in the public sector after graduation!

Accounting Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It was an incredible experience working within a federal agency. Attending school in Washington DC, I've learned the importance of civic duty and engagement as well as the role of government. My internship experience allowed me to be more familiar with the regulatory aspect behind accounting. I have experienced unique aspects of the SEC - Commission meetings, looking at the SEC regulations process, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more tasks and responsibilities. I would work on various small projects, but I wish I had worked on one meaningful engagement. However, I know that I learned how to take initiative and knowing how to effectively communicate with my supervisor about wanting more work and/or feedback.

Advice

Having the SEC experience is a great way to jump start your accounting path! There were so many employees at the SEC who were willing to share their professional experiences before the SEC as well as just overall advice.
