Public Health Intern

May - August 2018 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to utilize all the campus resources. I liked being able to shock them as they did not originally think I was capable of much. My internship program provided support mocking the support that is provided to the PhD students. We had weekly workshops and practice presentations.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a mentor that was more involved with me. I spent most of my time in my office analyzing data.

Advice

Learning computer programming will help you. Accept all the textbooks they purchase you. I used them for my Epidemiology class at Grambling the following semester.

Orientation Leader

May - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

Gave me the opportunity to facilitate large and small scale group activities, provided me with a supportive network of peers and mentors, opened my eyes to the different experiences of many diverse populations that will be entering the University at Buffalo's campus life.

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing, this was probably one of the most influential and eye opening summer experiences I have ever had.

Advice

If you are looking to apply for this position, really understand why it is you are doing it. The days can get long and challenging, but if you remember what drove you to fill out that application and why this is something you worked hard to gain, then there is never a moment the tired won't be worth it.

Undergraduate Researcher

May 2019 • Amherst, NY

What I liked

I was allowed room to grow and become an independent researcher.

What I wish was different

The quote I hear thrown around all the time is, "If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research." This is all too true, I found much of the research experience tedious and repetitive because things more than often don't work. This will vary from project to project, but I wish I was able to make more progress in my time.

Advice

Don't be afraid of not knowing everything when you first walk into a lab. The graduate students are likely more than eager to help you, and certainly they were just as clueless when they started their research. Just be receptive to new knowledge and try your best to understand your experiments and their results.

Orientation Leader

April - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

This job has moments where they push you to go outside your comfort zone and challenges you to take on new tasks. However, you were never felt pressured to do anything you knew in your heart you didn't want to do or anything you didn't know how to do.

What I wish was different

I wish I wouldn't have been as tired as I was by the end of the experience because it was such a good experience to have. It was just a really long intense one all at once.

Advice

I would say; Know going into the job, or even the application process, exactly what you will be giving up. For you to do the job properly and to get the most out of the experience, you need to devote the majority of your summertime to this position and what it stands for.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

It was challenging work, and the work I did was useful and respected.

What I wish was different

It had been more of an area of interest for me

Advice

Be ready to work independently, and only receive support when reaching out. Frequently, none of the other students were in the lab as it was computationally focused (so you could work from home.) This could be demotivating if you're not prepared for it.
