Undergraduate Psychology Student Intern

June - August 2017 • Denver, CO

What I liked

The internship position was much more than a desk job--the first two weeks that I worked at the BDC were purely about learning the ins and outs of Type 1 Diabetes. I was able to shadow and observe endocrinologists, nutritionists, nurse practitioners, social work, and, of course, psychologists all of whom play large roles in caring for kids with T1D and their family. I was also able to attend Camp Colorado (a week of regular summer camp for kids with Type I) as medical staff and participate in a Hotel Study for a new pump pending FDA approval.

Advice

Working at the BDC, a person has to be open to the whole education. It is more than just book learning, take the time to prick your finger, wear a pump and CGM for a few days, engage with patients and their families, and try to get a sense of what these kids go through every moment of every day. It was an awesome experience for me because I tried everything that I could and learned a lot because of that mentality.
