News Reporter Intern

May - August 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

A few rewards from the internship was giving recognition to local events on a platform, the pleasure of having professionals check and help with work, and being published on the website. One of the challenges of the internship was learning to adapt to the way they frame their articles and scripts. Since NPR is a national platform, we have to follow that format exactly how they need. During my internship, there were some moments intimidating times during my internship . I hoped to hone the confidence in my work in regards to writing ledes and find good hooks and I believe that I have figured out how to do so, for the most part.

What I wish was different

I wish Emerson helped me find this internship opportunity.

Advice

The most important take-away from college, especially for liberal arts majors, is experience. So, my advice when it comes to internships is to apply to anything and everything. I applied for about 16 different internships across the country and only got back from one. Even if you don’t think you are qualified, there is always someone who will need help with something.
