Nursing Assistant
May - July 2021 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I enjoyed being able to have hands-on experience while in the Main Operating Room at UIHC. I think that by working with one specific team I gained confidence in the area. The medical and nursing team were very welcoming and willing to teach. The hours were doable and the nurse manager is very flexible with schedules.
What I wish was different
I wish that the position had been better explained for students working in the MOR. If you choose to do the Nursing Student Summer Employment (Summer 10) at UIHC and you choose to work on a medical-surgical unit, then you will be working as an actual nursing assistant. If you choose to work in the MOR, then you will work more as a scrub technician.
Advice
One piece of advice I have is do not to get discouraged. You will make mistakes and that is alright. You are still a student and are still learning. Take every opportunity as a learning experience.
