Undergraduate Researcher

June 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I enjoyed getting some hands-on experience in my field of interest. As a student, I don't know what it is that I want to do career-wise after college. This experience helped me narrow down my field of interest.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had signed up for a shorter program and had the option to continue throughout the process if wanted, so that if I felt that research wasn't the area I wanted to continually pursue, I wouldn't be tied into the experience.

Advice

No matter what, if you don't enjoy an experience in the beginning or if it overwhelms you, stay with it. Test it out for a little while longer, and you may end up enjoying it more than you had previously thought possible.

The S.T.A.R (Summer Training in Alcohol Research) program is a great insight into the life of independent research. The lectures cover a variety of topics from biochemistry, biology, neurosience, and psyhology. The training also included a presentation and discussion of your research.
