University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy

Pharmaceutics Summer Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Great people to work with, relaxed work environment, opened an opportunity to do undergraduate research, got to learn new skills and use existing skills in new ways, provided a good opportunity to sample the field before deciding if it was what I wanted to pursue (in terms of research and classwork) during undergraduate and future education.

What I wish was different

I wished I had interacted with other lab members more, but got to know them decently well by the end of the internship/research experience.

Advice

Paid summer research opportunities in university departments are great for out-of-state undergraduates because they allow you to stay on campus and gain valuable experience, while not being tied to the field. If you decide that you want to do something different after the internship, the skills you gain are still important to apply to your future work. If the research is interesting and you wish to pursue it after the summer, getting to know the professor and lab members during the internship makes it a lot easier to ask about continuing there as a research assistant or for credit - provided you take initiative on tasks, there is a good chance a few people in the lab would have gotten accustomed to you working there by the end of the internship.
