4-H summer intern
May - August 2019 • Jordan, MN
What I liked
I loved being able to work with kids and teach them about different topics I was passionate about. Also being able to work in an environment that I was familiar with because I had been a 4-Her in Scott county for the past 10 years
What I wish was different
I wish that work would have been steadier. It was slow at the beginning and I feel as if I was just sitting around, but then when it got to fair week I worked 80+ hours in a week
Advice
Go into it with an open mind. Even if you know nothing about 4-H there will be someone there to guide you. You don’t need to know anything about showing animals or project judging. If you know how to interact with kids and adults and are confident you’ll be amazing at this job.

Agriculture Extension Educator Intern
May - August 2019 • St. Cloud, MN
What I liked
I loved the diversity of the work, my connections to the community, and the resources available to me working for the university.
What I wish was different
I would have liked to live at home, but ND does not offer these types of internships as often as MN. U of M Extension truly has a superior intern program.
Advice
Be open to trying new things! This job will throw a lot of unfamiliar circumstances and people at you, but you have a support system behind you in the Educators you are working with. Get to know your supervisors, not just the people you work with and expand your network.

Summer 4-H Youth Development Intern
May - August 2019 • Worthington, MN
What I liked
My favorite part of this internship was developing and delivering programming lessons to the Nobles County 4-H and community. These programming lessons enabled me to build relationships with numerous individuals including area youth, industry representatives, local government personnel, as well as neighboring extension staff. Also, these programming lessons allowed me to grow as an educator, by forcing me to develop lessons to be utilized in an informal setting, where you have to make do with what you have available with you, wherever you are.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more opportunities to work with and observe the SNAP, STEM, and Financial Capabilities Educators during their programming lessons. These educators serve unique audiences and they all have different methods they employ to connect with their audiences.
Advice
Don't be afraid to jump right in and take part in every activity or programming the office is putting on, regardless if it is a SNAP, STEM, or Financial Capabilities programming event. These educators all have unique audiences, that range from youth to adults, all of which have different language comprehension and speaking abilities, as well as learning abilities, and how these educators interact with all their is awe-inspiring. By attending their programmings, you will witness several successful and unique teaching strategies, which you could implement into your instruction.
