Data Analyst

What I liked

Since neuroscience research was new to me, I found the new types of technology used to look at nerves and cells was very interesting. On the first day I learned how pain reception was seen in peripheral nerves of mice under a laser microscope I had a graduate student who let me help her with her data as well. My job was very independent and I went at my own pace. Also, I was able to meet different colleagues in the department and other departments who always checked in on me and one even asked if I wanted her to write a recommendation letter for me. Every week a researcher from other colleges would come in to the department and share their research. I had a lot of new information coming out of this job.

What I wish was different

I wish I pushed myself harder to try and get more lab time. Although my main job was to put in data, I would’ve wanted to be more hands on with the research aspect of the job.

Advice

Even if the job or internship doesn’t focus on what you’re studying in school, it is still important to find new interests. You may be lucky and really find a career fit for you. Research is a great experience that always looks good on resume.
