University of St. Thomas

Legal Scholar

July - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I had the opportunity to get hands on experience in the legal field and to research questions about social justice law. I was able to work one on one with clients, go to court, learn about the various laws and policies that exist within immigration law and the paperwork that follows! It was a phenomenal experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to spend more time there to continue working on the cases I started. With the type of work I did I got to work one on one with clients and really get to know them and their stories however, within immigration law their cases are often tied up in the immigration system for years.

Advice

Be authentic with your application and do your best to convey why you would grow from this experience. When and if you end up working for one of the university law clinics, give it your all. They will put a lot on your plate and expect a lot from you, but trust your skills and know your boundaries. Never be afraid to ask for help and do your best to help your clients.
