Research Assistant

March - September 2019 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I liked being directly involved with the intervention portion of the research study. I got to interact with participants and see what happened behind the scenes in coordinating the research study.

What I wish was different

I wish that the Student Research Assistants (there were three of us over the course of the study) were allowed to do more. We observed the intervention procedures from a distance, performing small tasks when the interventionists needed helped. We conducted data input after the intervention portion of the study was complete. But, I would have liked to have a bigger role.

Advice

I would say to advocate for yourself when you start research. Ask for more to do. Become more involved with the process. It was only when the other Research Assistants and I asked for more to do that we were given the responsibility of data input.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

It's a really intense job– emotionally draining, physically taxing, really fast-paced– but if you know you enjoy being busy all the time and doing a lot of care work for people (and don't mind doing dishes), go for it!
