University of Wisconsin - Whitewater

Marketing Intern

September 2020 • Whitewater, WI

What I liked

In my previous job experience, I never got to participate in meetings related to marketing and sales; all of that information was boiled down and work was simply distributed to me. Working with Career and Leadership Development has allowed me to take part in a lot of the planning and generation of plans for the semester, which has been a nice addition to my work experience.

What I wish was different

As much as I enjoy the flexibility of working remotely, I do think that working in person with everyone would have made the experience even better, but obviously 2020 has left us all out of control of that.

Advice

Throughout the semester I have realized the importance of over-communicating, especially while being remote. This really helps establish clarity with everyone working on projects. Additionally, being open about what is happening with school and your personal life is good to establish with peers because often if something is getting difficult, everyone will do what they can to assist you in making the situation easier.

What I liked

My boss and coworkers are very friendly and assign many different projects to keep the work interesting. They are extremely flexible with my school schedule and understand that my studies come first.

What I wish was different

The pay isn't very high, but that is expected with an on-campus job. That being said, I love this job. I plan on working here for as long as I can.

Team leader

July 2019 • Whitewater, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed how I was able to have a leadership position and become a role model to the young adults that I was responsible for. I never had a leadership position that connected me so much with students and it really made my job a lot easier and made the two weeks go by fast.

What I wish was different

I do not wish anything would have been done different, I am happy that I had the opportunity to be able to participate in this program. I believe next year I will join this program again since I had such a great experience with it!

Advice

I would share that even though I did not think I would be fit for a leadership position with kids, I actually was. I just had to get out of my comfort zone and do something different. The kids loved me and I loved the kids, overall I would definitely recommend the PreCollege Program for anybody on campus.
