Corrections Accountability Project Summer Analyst

July - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked learning about the prison-industrial complex on a more detailed level by analyzing the profits made off of incarcerated people in Texas prisons.

What I wish was different

I wish that my supervisor had been more supportive and encouraged more projects among other interns-- we were very isolated from each other and were often told to work from home.

Advice

Be clear with the supervisor about the kinds of projects you want to work on and don't take the supervisor's criticisms too personally.

What I liked

I got to experience the Bronx Courthouse and working with people who were being evicted. It was a manageable entrance into the legal sphere.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to do more research for motions and work on a larger variety of cases.

Advice

Be active about seeking out work with other projects under the UJC umbrella, the staff/lawyers are really happy to accommodate and it gives you access to a variety of experiences in legal services.
