Activity Cart Volunteer

May - August 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I loved getting to talk to and help people! A lot of the people there have to sleep in waiting rooms for days without toiletries. When I can connect them with the resources that they need I know how much it means to them.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Be positive because a lot of the people you meet are having the worst days of their lives!

Vanderbilt Experience Summer Nursing Internship Program

May - July 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I liked that the patients we helped were high acuity. It was a good experience to get comfortable in the health care environment and see what it feels like to be a nurse. A lot of the nurses are willing to take the extra steps to teach you something. You become more confident in your assessment skills.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been weekly seminars or lectures to connect what we were learning on the clinical side. Many of the things we saw here weren't things we had talked about in school because they are so rare so it is hard to make connections.

Advice

Start a notebook at the beginning of the program to record your experiences.

Biology Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I enjoyed how hands-on this experience was. I was able to fully engage in the research project; from wet lab techniques to conference meetings, I was given the opportunity to participate in every step. I also enjoyed how holistic the internship was. Aspirnaut (the program through which I interned) facilitates both professional and personal growth.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would advise students to use this experience not just to learn practical research skills, but to also learn about themselves and their career interests. This internship is a great introduction to research, and if you really engage in the experience to make it as fulfilling and comprehensive as possible, you will be able to really gauge your interest in research as a career.
