Food Service Worker

November 2019 - March 2020 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

I love serving the community I was a part of and being able to serve in such a way that I can still connect with my community and serve them. They treated me so nice at work and were very flexible knowing I was a student and a worker. They always tried to best accommodate me and had such an extensive patience for me, knowing it was my first time working.

What I wish was different

I wish that COVID hadn't change the circumstance where I had to quit my job and go back home.

Advice

Be very attentive when learning and learn how to listen and revise and remember especially since we are working with food and coffee. Also remember customer service is just that, you serve them and serve in the friendliest way possible even if it isn't returned.

Writing Consultant/ Student Ambassador

July - August 2020 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

Even with the limitations to how we could organize events with the students because of COVID-19 we still found ways to worship, provide tutoring, and help the students when necessary while still social distancing, wearing our masks, and taking the right safety precautions to keep the students, student workers and faculty safe and healthy.

What I wish was different

Because of COVID-19 there was not a lot of bonding between the students and I know when I was a student in the summer bridge, making those bonds with the student leaders and my peers became essential to my experience here at Vanguard. But even in my year of summer bridge, the humanities bridge and stem bridge were always so separated. I think even more so now than ever because of the pandemic. But I think if next year provides us with good health conditions we need to find a way to somehow make that bond between stem and humanities stronger.

Advice

The Summer Bridge program is a very social program, there are many field trips, including a camping trip, and lots of amazing experiences that come with being apart of this program. Even though these activities were halted this year because of the pandemic we still were as social as we could be with the restrictions of social distancing because we wanted the students to have an amazing experience even though they were deprived of so many things during the program. So for future years to come with Summer Bridge, I would say to be ready for the social skills it requires to keep up with all the normal activities.

Cashier

September 2017 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

I like that I was able to work 40 hours a week this summer with Vanguard University, which is not my usual schedule during the school year.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have stayed on campus while working here just because I had a long commute and I know it would have been easier for me.

Advice

Summer is a great way to save up for the following school year, so students try and save up as much as you can! It really helps!

Studet Account Specialist

September 2017 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

I gained a lot of experience by working almost full-time in the office. Since we were down a person in the department, I was given a lot more responsibilities that has helped me grow in all aspects of myself, as well as being surrounded by very supportive and friendly people.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I was able to balance my summer courses ( I was taking 9 units at OCC) and my job without any problems, except maybe pushing myself a little too much.

Advice

I highly recommend finding a job on campus for easy access. You also gain experience with many people who are alumni of the university, or who are very close in age and so you have the opportunity to build relationships.
