Visual Media Manager

November 2017 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Good environment and has a lot of projects to work on. You get good feedback and improvement, with a variety of types of skills you build. Worked on editorial, digital, print, and a lot of really different and both high and low profile projects. Super flexible hours and scheduling.

What I wish was different

Over the summer especially if there aren't a lot of other students working it can get a bit hectic, but the work load doesn't really get overwhelming.

Advice

Checking in with more senior workers if you're stuck and managing your time effectively.

Short shift

Management is terrible. I don't mean the students who are managing you, I'm talking mostly about the Coordinators. They are terrible, rude, passive aggressive, and childish. One guy comes in while he's off the clock so he can find employees who aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing so he can rat on them. Again, while he's off the clock. There also isn't enough for you to do, especially if you're working check in. And you aren't allowed to do anything else other than sit there for hours, and click two things when someone walks in. It's mundane and boring and it sucks. You aren't even allowed to read or do homework, which is just ridiculous, especially for a job that mostly college students are employed by. You get scolded for doing homework and they want to just watch you do literally nothing. The scheduling is also terrible, and weekends are awful. If you don't like your schedule, you're stuck with it ALL YEAR since they they schedule you for an entire semester. At least it's consistent though. I've worked 7 jobs in my life so far and this is definitely the worst one I've ever worked. Would not recommend unless absolutely no other place will hire you.

Advice

The homework rule. It's got to go. It's ridiculous. As stated above, you literally just sit there for 3 hours, and occasionally click a button to check people in. Why are we not allowed to do something more productive??? There's too much downtime and not enough to keep you busy while you're on the clock. Not to mention you aren't moving at all, just sitting in one place. It's terrible.
