VERTIV

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Ironton, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to be hands-on at VERTIV, as well as the comfortable daily atmosphere. During my time here, I was able to learn and experience new, valuable skills that I never thought I would get the chance to gain practice in. I also made lasting friendships with my colleagues that helped me adapt to this new opportunity much faster, as well as learned a wealth of knowledge from the experiences and helpfulness they offered to me. In addition, I was able to take on an engineering project of my own, requiring me to get involved with all aspects of the facility and the staff within it. This type of learning is essential, in my opinion, to gaining the skills needed in the field.

What I wish was different

For the most part, my days were filled with projects and daily duties, but other days felt much slower. This left times where I knew I could be doing more with my time. As frustrating as it was, some days just had less to do in terms of objectives, whether it meant waiting on test results or completing work on projects early. All in all, however, this was a minor inconvenience, and it pushed me to get more involved.

Advice

If I were to give one piece of advice, it would be to not be afraid to get your hands dirty. Not only do I mean this literally, as getting involved with and learning from the staff in the plant makes that a guarantee, but also figuratively, meaning that this work requires you to be involved in whatever you can. Putting yourself out there and diving into big projects that force you to communicate with others and coordinate tasks is one of the best ways to get true, meaningful experiences that can be referenced in the future. VERTIV gave me that opportunity to really grasp what it means and what it takes to succeed in a manufacturing environment by allowing me to learn this way.
