It is incredibly rewarding work by being able to help people. You also get to learn about the issues in Summit County that many would not have even thought of. You will be introduced to a large amount of information and processes in the courts and criminal justice processes. You will also have opportunities to meet prosecutors, judges, caseworkers, and other advocates who work in summit county.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have interned for longer.
Advice
You need to have the initiative to go out and seek work.
As it is in social work, every day will be different with a variety of challenges and requires the ability to adapt to constantly changing work.
In this work you will see people in the early stages of their crisis. Although you can provide help at that time, you may not have the experience of seeing the person after they have worked through their troubles. It may be something that weighs on you as you reflect.
Because Victim Assistance is non-profit, they simply do not have the funds to pay interns and volunteers.
