Veterinary Clinic Assistant

July 2020 • Roseville, CA

What I liked

Many opportunities to grow and learn new things. I am learning things everyday when I work and I have gotten a lot of experience working with clients and veterinarians to solve problems for their pets.

What I wish was different

Communication between supervisors and the company overall could improve.

Advice

A great place for people who are starting out in the veterinary field, although some prior knowledge and experience is definitely recommended.

October 2018 • Lakeland, FL

What I liked

hands on experience that is only weekends with long hours so it fits my school schedule perfectly.

What I wish was different

not so far, its an hour and a half drive from where i live, but its only 2 days a week so its worth it.

Advice

its definitely hands on and there is much room for growth. the amount of training opportunities and chances for raises help significantly as a college student and made me feel prepared for my animal career.

What I liked

I love how you're able to complete accolades and receive raises very early on!

What I wish was different

That there are more opportunities to work during the week. It's mostly a weekend job, which is great for students, but I wish there were more opportunities to work during the week for those of us who can.

Advice

To complete your accolades as soon as you can to receive a raise :)

Veterinary Assistant

May 2018 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

I love the veterinary experience I'm getting from this job. The veterinarians we work with are friendly and helpful. Many of them willingly give tips and insight and are overall great to be around. All of my coworkers are friendly and enjoyable - we all have a great time working together.

What I wish was different

The starting pay is a bit low when you consider the risk of being bitten/scratched. It's unlikely, but it still happens. Of course, any injury on the job is covered by worker's compensation, but when you consider starting pay at Aldi grocery stores or Moe's restaurants can be around $11-12, it looks a little low. Not to mention the daily, repetitive heavy lifting required to set up equipment for clinics. Overall though, the starting pay is better than a lot of other jobs and it's my only complaint.

Advice

Make sure you take the time to memorize the products and vaccines. Many of them have minimum age limits and specific weight ranges for different types. Most products and vaccines are exclusively for either cats or dogs, but not both, and minimum age requirements vary from product to product. It's also super helpful to be able to give a price estimate off the top of your head for any product or service to a client who asks.
