I wish I had more work to do as a freshman. It is understandable though because I did not know enough to work on any of our larger projects.

What I liked

This internship helped me explore other allied health professions within the healthcare sector.

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person. This year, it was virtual due to the pandemic. However, that did not take away from the invaluable knowledge I gained from this experience.

Advice

Be confident, ask questions, treat your virtual conferences, interview, internships and so on as if it were in person. Having that attitude will help you get the most from the experience.

What I liked

Not only was the research area extremely interesting and applicable to my major, but the freedom available to me in terms of methodologies for testing hypotheses was extremely beneficial.

What I wish was different

A slightly longer program such that I could continue to do the research for longer.

Advice

Participate in Undergraduate Research as soon as possible, it is a vital experience everyone should gather regardless of their major and background.

Both the director and graduate assistant who I worked under at Equity Research Lab were very communicative and flexible. I greatly appreciated initial options as to what I would be interested in helping with, the team meetings, and the remote-work environment.

What I wish was different

Advice

Make sure to communicate often about changes in scheduling and updates on what you're working on. Work with Equity Research Lab is fast-paced, and if you do not finish something one shift, someone might take up that same work before your next shift.

I loved the flexibility in hours and the great working environment

What I wish was different

I wish we had been more accurately informed about how often we would be on-call. I had been under the assumption that I would only have 1 overnight on-call shift per week, but at times it could be as high as 4 or 5 nights.

Advice

Take the time to set a schedule that accounts for all of your other summer plans in their entirety, so that you won't have to worry about requesting time off after you've started your job.

The experience that I got out of it. I was able to learn a lot of things about the study that I was working on, as well as clinical experience.

I wish that I could have stayed their longer, but I transferred schools.

Get all the experience you need because it looks good on resumes, and you will gain a lot of knowledge and experience, as well as be able to network with a lot of different people in doing so.

The freedom to make my own schedule, working on a project that I was interested in.

What I wish was different

I mainly wish I had more time to spend in the lab. I also have a job off-campus that takes up most of my time outside of classes

Advice

Research is definitely something that you have to be passionate about. It can be difficult and frustrating at times but you have to just be willing to keep working on it if you want to see good results. Don't be afraid of it!

Biomedical Research Intern

What I liked

Working with PhD students and the research doctors in the lab was very rewarding and informative. They were very helpful in teaching me and I enjoyed learning about their research topics. The lab also has high standards for protocols and lab procedures to ensure good results.

What I wish was different

I was happy with the experience overall, my only comment would be that it was more of a cell culture lab than a biomechanics lab, which is what I am interested in.

I would tell them what you are interested in initially so you work on a project that you like.
