Pharmacy Technician

July 2022 • Bartlett, IL

What I liked

I liked the experience of a new environment (healthcare + retail). I learned different workflow expectations in such an environment being that I've learned what the industry of business expects.

What I wish was different

I wished there were more expansive tasks and roles for my position. My job description covered many tasks, but did not have much room to cover different responsibilities.

Advice

I would advise people that are considering a work opportunity that is different/unrelated to their program to go ahead and try it. Learning and working in a different industry/environment from their program is a great way to be versatile, gain different skills in another industry, and adapt to different perspectives.

Certified Pharmacy Technician

June 2021 • Woodbury, MN

What I liked

Great way to learn about the field of Pharmacy and what to expect from a job as a retail pharmacist. I liked learning about insurance policies and how to understand how to work within insurance formularies, search for medicaid eligible patients, and working with doctors to authorize medications for insurance coverage.

What I wish was different

I wish that I knew how understaffed most Walgreens were before I took the job, because the understaffing had a huge impact on my training process. Maybe once or twice a week a senior technician would have the time to train me in the beginning, but most days I was left to run the cash register without any training on solving insurance issues or in where to find special prescriptions, so I had to ask for help often which slowed down my productivity and that of the co-worker that I asked for help.

Advice

If you are thinking about becoming a tech, I would really recommend getting certified. Studying for the certification test gave me so much important knowledge I use everyday in the pharmacy, especially the drug names. Memorizing generic and brand names for drugs and what they are used for has helped immensely when communicating with patients who may have limited english skills or have forgotten the name of the medication (happens frequently).
