Cart to Curb Shopper

November 2021 - May 2023 • Malvern, PA

What I liked

Co-workers Ability to change what department to want to work at Working Independently Good hourly pay Flexibility

What I wish was different

Treatment of workers by management Conflict between departments Better employee benefits/discounts

Advice

Wegmans pays well and is an overall good place to work as a student. However, a large part of your experience depends on management. When I originally started working at Wegmans the store and front-end manager were amazing and always walked around and made sure to say Hi to every employee and listened to our concerns. When we got a new store manager, she always stayed in her office and only talked to other upper-level employees while ignoring everyone else. We also went through many new front-end managers after our original one was transferred who were very harsh and tended to choose favorites. My advice would be to not work in the front-end department as the managers will overwork you and cross many boundaries. It is okay to say no to extra work or go home when you feel unwell. If you have a bad manager you can always change departments, I recommend produce or cart collection.

What I liked

I love the culture at Wegmans, everyone feels like a family and it is a fun place to work.

What I wish was different

I wish there were advancement opportunities for part time employees in more departments than the front end.

Advice

Get to know your managers, pick up extra shifts and always keep yourself busy. That way, when you need something (time off, a raise, a recommendation, etc.) they will be more likely to help you out.

Cashier

May 2022 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

This company genuinely cares for its employees. While the job can feel redundant, the workplace itself never was. It was nice to come into work knowing that there were people there who cared about me, and that if anything went wrong on the job, there was a support system of coworkers there for me.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more variety with the job, however, management is very lenient, and if I had asked, I could have been given the opportunity to cross train on a different department.

Advice

It is a great place to work over the summer, and once you are hired, you are able to return to work during breaks from school. They also offer a scholarship if you work a certain amount of hours.

Store Operations Management Intern

May 2021 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed working a different variety of shifts so I could learn how the store operated at different times of the day, as well as opening and closing procedures.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more exposure in the perishable departments, as I believe this would have enhanced my knowledge of product inventory and ordering, an important part of operations.

Advice

Embrace every opportunity you are given and learn to become comfortable embracing new experiences.
