Wellesley Davis Museum & Cultural Center

Collections Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Wellesley, MA

What I liked

I loved the staff, program, and my coworkers. Each professional at the Davis was helpful in their own way and very friendly. The program is also well designed for interns to understand the Davis deeply, the museum industry, and museum programs. It's also quite a lovely experience to work with fellow Wellesley students.

What I wish was different

Summer housing was a bit of a mess in terms of assignment and storage. All Davis interns were placed on East side, which seemed like poor judgement considering the Davis is right next to the West side dorms. Additionally summer storage towards the end was a bit hectic.

Advice

Apply if you're interested in nonprofits, museums, museum programs, or art history!

Collections Intern

June - August 2017 • Wellesley, MA

What I liked

Learning about collections stewardship in depth and also getting to learn about other professions in the world of museums and cultural institutions through workshops, visits to other museums, intern lunches with staff members, and group projects that exposed me to different professional areas within the Davis.

What I wish was different

That the internship had been longer than ten weeks!

Advice

The collections internship varies a lot depending on what needs to be done that summer (as do all the internships) and the cataloging work I did had little in common with the photography and digitization that an intern the summer before did.

I loved the people I worked with , the weekly staff lunches and field trips, and the ability to try new areas within the field of museum studies.

What I wish was different

I wish that a goal planning and communication had been a bit better.

Advice

Staying really open to opportunities and networking opportunities is essential.
