Western Washington University

Student Custodial Staff

June - August 2023 • Bellingham, WA

What I liked

I loved the flexibility of creating my own schedule. I wanted to work full time and save up money, and I was able to work as much as I wanted. My supervisor, Tina Lopez was very amenable and helpful anytime I had questions about the job. I also loved working with other students and peers.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything about my experience at this job. It was great for the place I was in where I needed to make money and I enjoyed going to work each day. I felt very productive with the work I was doing and knew I was helping the school for the upcoming school year.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this job is that even though it is a custodial job, it is still through the university and that can help open a lot of doors for you in the future. Everyone has to start somewhere!

Swim Instructor

January 2023 • Bellingham, WA

What I liked

This job has been the best job I have ever had. Not only are the students incredibly fun to work with, but my coworkers have been extremely supportive. I feel so fulfilled after every shift, and this is a job I hope to keep until I graduate college. I have grown as a leader and my confidence in myself as well. Everyone is very flexible and I don't have anything negative to say about this job as well as the people I work with.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

I came into this job never having taught before, and had never been on swim team nor practiced swimming in a professional setting before. They accepted me with no prior experience and not only certified me (WSI certified) for free, but happily answered any questions and supported me along the way. As long as you show up and show that you care, WWU will handle the rest. You get plenty of time to practice and "shadow" other teachers as well as help creating lesson plans before you start working, I felt very prepared. I can now teach Red Cross swimming lessons at any facility that offers them!

Biology Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Bellingham, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the patience of the professor I worked with in introducing me to the workings of the lab, and teaching me all of the protocols and techniques I'd be using throughout the internship. Overall, I liked being able to connect the biology and chemistry knowledge I learned in lectures to the real world, and contribute to the greater project that that lab group is involved with.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more prepared going into this internship. While I knew enough to make my way through the lab, I wish I spent more time refreshing on biological concepts and laboratory techniques before the internship began so I didn't have to catch up so quickly throughout the first few weeks.

Advice

Don't be afraid to make mistakes or admit that you don't know something. I had to learn to be okay with telling my professor that I was confused or didn't know how to carry out the protocol, and she was very accepting each time and helped me take the steps to develop a deeper understanding of what I was doing.
