Biology Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Bellingham, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the patience of the professor I worked with in introducing me to the workings of the lab, and teaching me all of the protocols and techniques I'd be using throughout the internship. Overall, I liked being able to connect the biology and chemistry knowledge I learned in lectures to the real world, and contribute to the greater project that that lab group is involved with.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more prepared going into this internship. While I knew enough to make my way through the lab, I wish I spent more time refreshing on biological concepts and laboratory techniques before the internship began so I didn't have to catch up so quickly throughout the first few weeks.

Advice

Don't be afraid to make mistakes or admit that you don't know something. I had to learn to be okay with telling my professor that I was confused or didn't know how to carry out the protocol, and she was very accepting each time and helped me take the steps to develop a deeper understanding of what I was doing.
