WETA

Gwen Ifill Fellow

August 2018 - January 2019 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

The production staff and HR were very friendly; there were also numerous volunteering events for employees to work with in the D.C. area.

What I wish was different

I wish the editorial staff for the show I was worked had been more welcoming and that were more mentoring opportunities (within my team and in the company).

Advice

If you receive this position, try to stay in a place near the Arlington/Alexandria-area because there can be long hours and the commute is no joke if you live anywhere else.

Television Broadcasting Intern

June - August 2018 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

I had really great bosses and WETA is a really nice company to work at. I felt I learned a lot about the public TV industry.

What I wish was different

I realized this summer that I am a lot more of an extrovert than I previously thought and need to be in a job with more in-person interaction. This job was regularly 8 hours at a computer, and that seemed to be the experience 80% of the time for my bosses as well. Unfortunately my boss told me that the intern experience is highly dependent on the production schedule and my internship happened to fall during a post-production period (which was the reason for so much computer time). He told me that usually the intern gets to accompany the producers out into the field for filming when the internship falls during a production period.

Advice

Ask lots of questions! I learned to make the best of an internship experience, I need to really try to figure out what interests someone about the job they are doing and how they got there.
