Wilderness Guide

June 2022 • Ely, MN

What I liked

Loved getting to spend time outside and learn patience, communication, leadership, and wilderness skills. Adored the community and close relationships this experience fostered. The job did not feel like your typical boring job, watching hours tick by; each day was fruitful and interesting and a learning experience, yet also so much fun. The beautiful Boundary Waters were such a blessing to have as my ‘office’ and I’m so excited to continue leading trips in even more remote landscapes. I felt confident and fulfilled.

What I wish was different

Nothing, truly. It always would be nice to be paid a little more, as $85 per day isn’t sustainable for many people, but for a job that in many ways feels like a wilderness haven vacation, and as a young adult that is seeking adventure and time outside, it was great.

Advice

Be outgoing, ask people for help, and be engaged and involved.

Advice

When you start a new position, reach out to your co-workers and invite them to grab coffee or lunch for an informational interview where you can learn about their life and what they do at your organization. In doing so, you attain basic information about your co-workers that can serve as the foundation to great relationships.
