Branch Manager

December 2018 - August 2019 • Athens, OH

What I liked

Student Painters a very unique opportunity for college students to get hands on experience with business. No other internship will give you the responsibility and freedom that Student Painters gives you. Spending a summer with Student Painters you will learn just how much effort, determination, and resilience goes into running a business and you learn numerous invaluable soft skills. My experience at Student Painters gives me the confidence to walk into any job interview knowing that if I could run my own business as a college freshman, I could definitely handle whatever job I’m interviewing for. I strongly believe that anyone can do this internship if they are willing to put in the effort to make it happen. I recommend this internship to anyone interested in business who has an ambitious spirit and an undying work ethic to make your vision come true.

What I wish was different

I wish that more time was spent training us on the actual painting involved in the business.

Advice

This internship is only for people who are willing to put a lot of time in to it. You have to be willing to give up most of your free time. If you choose to do the internship, I would recommend trying to find a good work-life balance and practicing stress reduction techniques.

What I liked

Student Painters has allowed me to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine, to run a successful business. I have grown more as an individual, entrepreneur, leader and student more than ever before in my life. Student Painters has no ceiling on how much you can succeed and how much profit you can make. In my case running an $40,000 business while profiting more than $5,000 my sophomore summer. I was provided with a solid business model platform, told what I needed to do to succeed and the rest figured itself out. I’m not trying to sugar coat it, this was definitely the hardest challenge I have yet to face, but the reward of my hard work paid for itself. Anyone that is looking for an opportunity that truly forces you to grow professionally would be missing a great opportunity by passing it up. Being able to compete and perform on the same level as fellow college students is a thrilling and life altering experience. Without Student Painters I would have no where near the business experience and knowledge I have today. This is an opportunity that not many people get to say they went through. I feel I have a great advantage over my peers after successfully completing my summer with Student Painters.

What I liked

This summer I worked for Student Painters as a Branch Manager and ran a $92,000 business at 20 years old while making great money. This was an incredible experience that I am so thankful I had the opportunity to have. The company is full of amazing people who want to build up the people around them while providing awesome customer service. If you have the opportunity to be a part of this organization or use our services for your home you should not hesitate to accept it.

What I liked

I was given tons of support from leadership in the company, but they give you the opportunity to make small mistakes that challenge you and help you grow. This is definitely single most impactful growth experience I've professionally and personally. I would encourage everyone to at least learn more about this opportunity!

What I wish was different

I wish I had put in more effort early on to make it easier on myself later on

Advice

I would advise everyone to hire employees EARLY, you business is only as good as the people that make it up! Also trust your mentor and their advice, contact them often, they want to help you

It is a very competitive but collaborative company and it taught me so much about management and leadership. Everything I learned throughout these past few months I will use for the rest of my career in the future. There is no other company that I would gain the same responsibility and experience.

What I liked

You will learn more about yourself in a summer with YEAA than you will anywhere else.. Are you a quitter? Do you have good time management skills? Are you able to give direction to a group of individuals and properly manage them? You will learn the answer to these questions and more. I genuinely believe you are making a mistake by not seizing this opportunity and making the most out of it. This internship is a foundation to the rest of your career in business and you will gain so much hands on experience that you wouldn't get from any other internship being offered.

What I wish was different

Advice

Work hard until the end. It's so easy to throw in the towel early and give up or quit. You won't get the most out of this internship unless you put in the most.

What I liked

I learned how to run a business with all of the right tools. The mentorship part of the program is very good- your mentor helps you throughout the entire internship. The company is very involved in your success. We had multiple fun events placed throughout the summer like a boat outing, a Cincinatti baseball game, steakhouse dinner, and cookouts. You get to run the business out of your hometown which allows you to save money and live at home! There is an awards trip to a destination such as Cancun or the Bahamas for those who meet the production goal for the summer.

What I wish was different

Marketing on the weekends away from school wasn't always fun!

Advice

Find as many marketers as you can! Do your groundwork on hiring your employees because the employees you hire could be the difference in how well your business goes throughout the summer! Ask your mentor all of the questions you have and more - they know so much.

A lot of responsibility. I was running my own branch and therefore I was responsible for everything! Great learning experience.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have ended sooner so that way it would be easier to wrap up the summer before returning to school.

Advice

This experience was very difficult, mentally and physically. This experience was not for everyone but will teach everyone a lot.

What I liked

I liked that it gave experience in all areas of business including marketing, sales, management, recruiting, interviews and more.

What I wish was different

I wish the company had been a bit less selfish about the money. Near the end of the internship, no matter how stressed I was or how much I wanted to quit, they told me to make more money for them.

Advice

I would tell them to put in the work early on because it pays off later.

Getting to be the boss. I was in charge of hiring and overseeing workers for my business.

What I wish was different

The amount of work. I had very little free time as most of my time was devoted to my business.
