What I liked

I loved being able to work with marginalized communities and people of varied cultural backgrounds.

Kitchen Volunteer

June - July 2019 • Kailua Kona, HI

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with the people. I made friends from all over the world and was able to benefit from learning about different cultures. The staff was friendly and easy to work with. The work was hard and long at times, but the encouragement I gave and received kept everyone on track. I learned so much from other people and would not trade the experience for anything.

What I wish was different

Although I do not think I would change anything, something that could have been improved was the organization/structure for what was expected for the volunteers. During my time there, the students that we were serving were going through a transition period and volunteer schedule changed. It was nothing major, but sometimes many people were confused about when we were supposed to work and what everyone was supposed to do.

Advice

I would recommend that anyone going through this program should take advantage of everything offered. I made deep friendships here, but I could have done a better job. Enter this experience with an open and willing mind and be who you want to be. Try to minimize the possibilities for regret and maximize the possibilities of friendship and experience.
